Schaustelle – Sights and Sounds
Exhibition and Guided Tours on the History, Present and Future of the Kurfürstendamm
Following the very positive reception by tourists and locals alike of the successful Schaustelle concept – a wide-ranging programme of architectural tours of the government district, the regenerated Mitte area, and Potsdamer Platz during the 1990s – Berlin’s new and old architecture will once again take centre stage, putting the Kurfürstendamm in the spotlight for a time. The free outdoor exhibition will provide visitors with information about the past, present and future of the “Ku’damm”, as Berliners affectionately call it. The focus will be on the large-scale construction projects, as well as the restructuring and redesign of the Ku’damm’s sites: the restoration of the Memorial Church; the construction of the 32-storey Zoofenster, the future home of the new, luxurious Waldorf Astoria; the spectacular conversion of the Bikini Haus, dating from the 1950s; the renovation of the Zoo Palast cinema; the redevelopment of Haus Cumberland, built in 1912; and the redesign of Kurfürstendamm 198 into an eye-catching ensemble of elements from the classical modern period and contemporary architecture. These are just a few examples of the renowned boulevard’s transformation into a modern, forward-looking urban avenue with a very special atmosphere. At the golden staircase, visitors will find information about the events on the Ku’damm, have the opportunity to book tours and buy books and merchandising, and of course linger and enjoy the view.
Other plans include a large number of guided tours and visits on a very wide range of topics including architecture, literature, art, theatre and history. The meeting place for the guided tours will be at the golden staircase. Lexington Communications GmbH is organising and coordinating the Schaustelle Kurfürstendamm.
